Lagos State is Nigeria’s economic and cultural powerhouse. Though one of the country’s smallest states by area (~ 3,500 km²), it is the most populous, with estimates exceeding 20 million residents. Its capital is Ikeja, but the state includes Lagos City—a sprawling metropolis of islands and mainland districts interconnected by bridges and waterways.

As Nigeria’s financial, commercial and industrial hub, Lagos contributes around 30–35% of the national GDP. Key sectors include finance, manufacturing, telecommunications, real estate and creative industries. Lagos is also a major transport node, anchored by its sea ports, airports, and rapidly expanding infrastructure.
